##explanatory comments/crosstagging:
The Bombay-based artist Mulgaonkar's rendering of a glamorous young female seated cross-legged before a small black stone Shivalingam is another charming example of the divine honoring the divine. Parvati's eyes are closed in meditation and a shy smile plays on her lips. The viewer might be led by the title of the image to identify it as a scene from the narrative of Parvati’s austere quest to gain Shiva as a husband, well known from Kalidasa’s Kumarasambhava and other tellings. But here Mulgaonkar has dressed the goddess not in the bark-clothing of the ascetic, as Kalidasa tells the story, but in a diaphanous white gown tied with purple sash. The artist has also shown us Shiva himself, a handsome young man seated above and gazing with satisfaction at Parvati, perhaps representing the inner vision of the meditating goddess. (Richard H. Davis)(gs)
