Objektbeschreibung

Ursprünglich Stützpunkt der Reichsabtei Fulda im Grenzbereich zum Würzburger Bistum. Große Bedeutung als Etappenstation an der mittelalterlichen Handelsstraße von Frankfurt a.M. über Thüringen und Sachsen in den schlesisch-polnischen Raum. Im 12./13. Jh. an die Grafen von Rieneck, 1272 durch Heirat an Hanau. 1290 Stadtrecht. Im 15. und 16. Jh. Mittelpunkt der Obergrafschaft Hanau und zeitweise Nebenresidenz der Grafschaft Hanau. 1736 an Hessen-kassel 1866 an Preußen, heute Hessisch. Besonderheiten im 21. Jahrhundert: Kirche im spätgotischen Stil mit Erweiterungen der Renaissance. Interessantes Stadtbild mit Teilen der Stadtbefestigung und dem Schloß als Zitadelle mit starken Ausbauten in der Renaissance – und im Jahre 2002 wurde ein Teil der ursprünglichen „Via Regia“, der alten Reichsstraße ergraben und unweit des Originalverlaufes ein Teilstück rekonstruiert. In the beginning, the village of Steinau was a warhead at the borderline to the Prince Bishopric of Würzburg. That was of special interest, because Steinau does have the prefix “an der Straße” (along the road) and “the road” is the imperial “Via Regia” which runs from the imperial town of Frankfurt am main to Thuringia and further to Saxonian and finally to into the Silesia-Polish area. It was the main trading road and therefore of major importance. In the 12/13th century, the passion got to the counts of Rieneck, and by marriage in 1272 to the mighty Counts of Hanau. Soon after, in 1290, the Counts got town rights and the former (but also fortified) village with its castle was strongly walled. The Counts made the town to the administration center of the upper countdom of Hanau, and after the castle was modernized in the Renaissance (due to living and defense both), the counts choose it and the town as their second residence. In 1736, the possession got to Hessen-Kassel, and in 1866 to Prussia. Today it belongs to the country of Hesse, and is a fine restaurated and preserved gem, showing defense architecture ranking from the 13th to the 17th century, while the houses are mostly from out the 15-17th century (based on older ground, respectively). By the way, in 2002, a part of the origin “Via Regia” was excavated, and nearby on save ground, a small part the Via Regia was reconstructed in 2006, with the origin stones.
