Ranibennur/Ranebennur Taluka, Haveri District (until 1997: Dharwad District), Karnataka; one of the most important centres of the Mailara cult in Karnataka; on the day of Dasara, the god returns to his main temple and his special followers, the Vaggayyas (dogs) and Kancaviras (heroes) fullfill vows and perform self-tortures and various actions of devotion; the end of the festival is reached with the breaking of eleven heavy chains by (Vaggayya) members of eleven Kuruba families in front of the god - a proof of true bhakti (devotion) of the man and real presence of the god
